Vallauris/Golfe-Juan Situated between Cannes and Antibes/Juan les Pins at the Côte d´Azur is a charming small town with approximately 27.00 inhabitants. Vallauris has lot of restaurants for a good lunch. For dinner, the restaurant La Gousse d`All in the old town is highly recommended and in the lower part of Vallauris the Colombe Argile offers nouvelle cuisine. "Always a smile" is the slogan of Phu-Yen, owner of Vietnamese-korean restaurant in the Avenue de Cannes. The fish restaurant Tetou at the beach of Golfe Juan has gained a Michelin Star lately. Almost the same quality offers the restaurant Nounou next door, but offers much more moderate prices in comparison. Both restaurants are famous for their Bouillabaisse. There are also various restaurants at the harbour, which are all of the same quality and equal service and prices, whereas the "Sur les Quais" is famous for its Fuits de mer. The Michelin Guide offers more than a dozen restaurants with a Michelin star in the closest surroundings. Apart from St. Tropez Juan les Pins is the most famous city at the Cote d`Azur. In the summer months various discotheques offer the probably most turbulent night life for young an old on every single night. Also the festival city Cannes offers a very active night life, a casino directly at the Palais de Festival, the famous Palm Beach with all its Discotheques, the many coffee shops at the Croisette, Irish Pubs all over the Old Town and at the Rue d`Antibes. As worthwhile as a visit to the Old Town of Nice is visit of the 70 km remote St. Tropez, where the night is changed into the day. The opera house of Nice is as well known as outstanding in quality, the theatre, placed in the same complex, the museum of modern and actual art has a very good reputation far over the boundaries of Nice. History of Vallauris
Since approximately 5.000 years Vallauris is known for works with clay. In the 15th century all inhabitants of Vallauris died by the plague, but was again populated with Ligurians and Genovesians through the help and activities of the monks of Lies des Lereins. Until now the descendants of these ancient families are present in Vallauris. In the year 1815 Napoleon landed in the Golfe Juan and wandered over the Alpes to Paris with his abiders. His route went through the Golfe Juan, Vallauris. Mougins, Grasse and the most beautiful country sides of France - the famous "Route Napoleon". After a short stay in Antibes Picasso came to Vallauris in 1953. Not only the he brought life back to the rather idle little town through his work with ceramics, the man with the goat "L`homme au mouton" and above all the chapel in the Musee Chateau with the enormous fresco "war and piece" - "La guerre et la paix" witness his presence. Apart from this, Rita Hayworth and Ali Khan, who owns a large estate at the sea side of Golfe Juan, married in the town hall of Vallauris. A little museum was dedicated to the actor, writer, painter and ceramic artist Jean Marais, who had great influence on the ceramic art in Vallauris in the last years. The "Theatre de la mer" at the harbour of Golfe Juan bears his name. The Biennale Internationale de la Ceramique, the international ceramic Biennale is world famous. She will take place again in 2002 and consolidates the best and various famous ceramic artists of the world. The Biennale presents tradition as well as avant-garde and will take place from the beginning of July until the end of September 2002.

The surroundings of Vallauris
The Côte d`Azur is home of famous artistssince a very long time. Numerous museums between Grasse and Mouton witness this fact as well as the art that was created at the Cote. Amongst others, Fragonard, Matisse, Leger, Bonnard, Duty, Hartung, Klain, van Velde, Cocteau, Chagall, Renoir have live there. Today there are Baselitz, Ben, Arman, Sosno, Charvolen and many more. Cannes stands for the Film Festival in May, the Midem in January as well as various fairs, meetings, exhibitions and conferences. Every in Cannes offers something special and is plainly the best site for shopping at the Côte d`Azur. The biggest discotheques can be found in Juan les Pins. Nice is a metropolis with more than 500.000 inhabitants and is 24 km away from Vallauris. It can be reached from Golfe Juan in 15 minutes by train. Also worthwhile is a visit of Valbonne. The city planner of the old town of Valbonne has also created the old town of Vallauris.
